Whitebaiters breaking the law

Although wet weather has affected the amount of Whitebait, the Department of Conservation has found a number of people breaking the law with staff seizing five nets from whitebaiters in rivers in the Whakatane and Gisborne area.

The most common offence is fishing within 20 metres of floodgates or structures, with a number of prosecutions pending.

DOC spokesperson Jamie Quirk says this isn't fair on other fishermen.

He says the purpose of the Whitebait Fisheries Act is to give the fish a chance, and making the fisheries sustainable.
